Kryštof Ewanče
is an underground folk wood carver who lives in Czechia in the Slavonice region. His peasantry gives him absolute freedom to create objects and the underground allows him to replace chisels by a chain saw. He likes to use naturally formed wood as well as metal objects unknowingly created by men and which have unique magical like form. These are often parts of old farm machines: hoops, cogwheels, nails, harvesters etc.
He aspires to find a form which is pleasing to the human eye. One may think of it as a brick box game where wooden or metal parts lie by everywhere around us. Titles of his objects, which he himself calls "stubs", are only supplementary, perhaps even ridiculous. He likes a dictum of an eight years old student, who had once written that "The artist is a wood carver who, instead of making a table, makes wooden sculptures and other things which have no use."
